Water Saving Week – Smart Ways to Save Water in Building Services

This week marks Water Saving Week, a timely reminder of how easily water can be wasted if we’re not paying attention. Spearheaded by Waterwise, the campaign shares practical advice on how individuals and organisations can use water more responsibly.
But what about in the world of building services? While Waterwise covers great household and everyday tips, we’ve got a few of our own to add—specifically for those managing pump systems in commercial buildings.

1. Don’t Let Your Pumps Waste Water
Leaks and inefficiencies in pumping systems can quietly cause significant water loss over time. Worn seals, corroded components, or poorly maintained pumps might not trigger an immediate alarm—but they can gradually waste thousands of litres a year.

Routine inspections and servicing can make a big difference. At deckpro, we’ve supported clients with proactive maintenance strategies that identify issues early, keeping pump systems watertight, efficient and cost-effective.
2. Replace Gland Packing with Mechanical Seals
We’ve said it before, and we’ll keep saying it: switching from gland packing to mechanical seals is a simple, effective way to save water.
Gland packing allows a small, continuous leakage during pump operation, which is necessary to prevent overheating—but it adds up. Mechanical seals eliminate this need, forming a tighter, more reliable seal and significantly reducing water loss. Some reports estimate up to 25 billion gallons of water could be saved globally each year if industries made the switch.
Aside from saving water, mechanical seals are more energy-efficient, reduce breakdowns, and cut maintenance costs—so it’s a win-win.
Tip: If your site’s water bills have crept up without explanation, it might be time to take a closer look at your pumps.
3. Upgrade Older Pump Systems
Some older pump systems simply aren’t designed with efficiency in mind. They may use more water, require more energy, and be harder to maintain. In these cases, it may be worth exploring a full pump upgrade to modern, eco-efficient alternatives.
Our team can carry out full system assessments and provide ROI-based recommendations to help you make sustainable, cost-effective decisions.

Water may flow easily from the tap, but that doesn’t mean it should be taken for granted—especially in commercial and industrial settings, where losses can be invisible but significant.
